“Beauty is a willing loss of mental control, surrendered to an organic process that is momentarily under the direction of an exterior object.”&#38;nbsp; Peter Schjeldahl, New York Times Art Critic
In its most rudimentary definition, painting can be understood as an act of making marks on a surface. For this body of work, I dove into the processes behind making, simultaneously pursuing ideas of beauty and ‘prettiness’ and their relationships to femininity.
 Ranging from complete control over the Found Shell series to minimal control over Overboiled and Mildew #1 (growth), I explored the agency that I, as an artist, had over the making of my work through the incorporation of natural phenomena.
 BioBorn in Rural New Hampshire, Scout Armstrong is currently a Portland, Maine based artist. Her work pursues ideas of prettiness, beauty, and agency through their relationships with concepts of femininity. Armstrong received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maine College of Art &#38;amp; Design in 2022 with a concentration in Painting, and a minor in Creative Writing. Her work has been shown throughout the New England Area.

	Me and My Imaginary Friends
For my thesis body of work, I have created manifestations of imaginary friends that encourage the viewer to engage in deep play and reconnect with their inner child. Through the creation of these sculptures, I ask the viewer to dive into a world of whimsy that is most accessible during childhood.
BioSydney Berkeley, originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is a ceramic artist and illustrator with a BFA from Maine College of Art &#38;amp; Design. Sydney often creates sculptural work that depicts fantastical characters enjoying childlike activities. Within her work, she aims to create whimsical narrative scenes and to illustrate imaginary friend characters who feel oddly familiar and nostalgic. She is motivated by the idea of nurturing the viewer and their "wonder-self", or inner child, by imbuing her work with a sense of comfort and play. Her illustrative ceramics speak to all ages and encourage the viewer to appreciate the vibrancy of life.

	The Ephemeral PoolThe Ephemeral Pool is an audiovisual installation exploring the artist's personal experience with mental illness. Bizarro utilizes art making as a form of therapeutic expression in order to externalize the complexities of managing mental illness and how that, in turn, causes her to question her own reality. This uncertainty leads her to search for greater meaning and answers to existential questions. Due to these experiences, the artist believes in the development of personal awareness of the separateness of our true selves from the workings of our minds. This installation offers both the artist and the viewer an opportunity to become aware of the ever-changing present moment and encourages meditative rest and reflection.&#38;nbsp; 
BioAmanda Bizarro is an interdisciplinary artist inspired by the interconnectivity between visual and emotional language and views art-making as a therapeutic expression of self that presents an opportunity to discover unknown personal truths. Bizarro’s work originates from her experiences living with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The experience of intrusive thoughts is most often channeled into her art through the repetition and layering of digitally manipulated video and audio. She uses these videos to stage ephemeral and multifaceted installations. The fleeting quality of such installations allows viewers the opportunity to become observant of the constant presence of change.

	Sclerotia
Nature has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember, from playing outside as a young child to the hikes I take with my fiancé and our dog now. Even as a young child the wonders of the natural world did not escape my notice, especially the magic of finding mushrooms where there weren't any the day before. I found the otherworldly nature of the mushrooms fascinating and the beautiful patterns and textures of them especially captured my attention. In my work I explore the intricate patterns of fungi focusing primarily on the fibrous and branching mycelium networks that can spread for miles and allow plants to communicate with each other via electric signals. I Strive to share the delicate beauty of these networks by creating a magnified facsimile of them so that anyone can share in the wonder I felt as a child discovering fungi growing in my backyard.

BioRiley Blocher is a metalsmith from western New York currently working in Portland, Maine and is set to graduate from Maine College of Art &#38;amp; Design with a BFA in May of 2022. Her work is heavily inspired by patterns found in the natural world and the patterns therein. Using thin nickel wire she creates intricately woven mycelium networks in order to share her love for the pattern of fungi with her viewers.

	Modern Day AngelsBy depicting divine beings in place of humans, my work challenges the notion that religion is a self-contained, separate part of life and explores the role it plays in enhancing everyday life, while also holding the dual meaning of romanticizing the mundane. The implication of an angel doing chores is not only suggesting that holiness exists within normalcy, but that the fulfillment of daily labors is part of what makes life meaningful and beautiful. 
BioValentine Alister-Fox Bonner is a printmaker and painter who graduated from Maine College of Art &#38;amp; Design in 2022. An ex-Catholic and practicing Quaker, Bonner’s work is heavily influenced by their religious views. Their work often uses images of angels doing daily chores such as washing dishes or folding laundry. Bonner believes there is holiness to be found in normalcy, and views making art as a form of worship. The labor of a difficult print practice such as stone lithography imbues the work with extra care and reflects the subject of everyday labors.

	At The End of The Road And Looking In All Directions (Laid On My Back I Could See The Sky)At The End of The Road And Looking In All Directions (Laid On My Back I Could See The Sky) acts as an exploration into the ways in which people in rural areas seek freedom in solitude, both in a physical sense and a spiritual sense. In a time in which the constant flow of data and information define the era, it seems the closure of the eyes is impossible. The ‘here and now’ seems foreign. Using the Maine woods as my subject, these photographs examine ideas of freedom and self-reliance through images describing something between solitude and loneliness, documentary and myth. A subtle absence is suggested in the ways in which I treat objects and landscapes as portraiture, as if what is seen is not what is being looked for. I am drawn to those around me who live in the back of pick-up trucks and tar paper cabins. Those who spend their days in the river panning for gold and riding four wheelers to the gas station for a pack of cigarettes. Within these lifestyles emerges themes of transcendentalism, punctuated by ideas of birth, death, spiritual ecstasy, and a desire to disappear.
BioRachel Bower is an artist from the coast of Maine working in the mediums of photography and bookmaking. Using rural life and the Maine woods as her subject, she explores a desire to disappear. Rachel received a Bachelors of Fine Art in Photography from Maine College of Art &#38;amp; Design. Her work has been shown by Aviary Gallery in Jamaica Plain, MA, Staycation Collective, and Topo Gallery in Camden, ME. She currently lives in Kennebec County, Maine where she can be found shooting tin cans off of fence posts and driving aimlessly in her Volvo station wagon.

BioSarah Breton is an artist based in Southern Maine. Breton has long been inspired by themes ranging from the metaphysical to ideas about perception(s). This usually manifests in her work through the format of science fictional themes; more specifically space vehicles and apparatuses. Sarah’s works compound on the two words, science and fiction, to create spaces where the viewer can enter or leave themselves of their own accord. This is achieved by (yet not limited to) materials such as broken circuitry; audio, video, paint and paneling, as well as written word. Her wish is to render tangible a shared inner dimension that we all have.

	Go To Hell
My thesis film, Go To Hell, is a culmination of years of consuming horror media and the want to create my own stories and beings.
Go To Hell follows my character Hal lovingly named after Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
My thesis is a surreal and experimental film where Hal has to find his decapitated head in Hell.
 I wanted it to be more of a visual experience than a linear film.&#38;nbsp;
 I really love the overlap of animation and film, as I take a lot of inspiration from horror movies and actually started out my college years as a film major.
I still consider myself a film student at heart because of how much influence they have on me and my work. Stuff like Reanimator, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Wicker Man, The Evil Dead, and a lot of David Lynch.

BioAmeera’s first memory is begging their dad to set up his camera above the kitchen table to take frame by frame photos of whatever Play-Doh monster of the day was being brought to life by his 5 year old daughter.
Growing up in the woods of central Massachusetts, Ameera took to running through the mud, wrangling bugs and frogs, smashing up random plants, and creating art.
Ameera’s work centers on the absurd and grotesque. Combining human anatomy, low budget 80’s horror, and their own imagination to create eccentric stop motion films.

	Mythical New York: Visions Through a Childs Eyes
Growing up, I would often visit New York City. Some of my fondest childhood memories came from those trips. For my thesis work, I wanted to embrace those memories and illustrate New York City from the perspective of a child’s imagination. My goal was to create this series with childrens book publication or editorial industries in mind. All my pieces are painted using color ink, gouache and hints of colored pencil.

BioLiz Burdick is an illustration major attending Maine College of Art and Design in Portland, Maine. After graduation in the Spring of 2022, she hopes to apply her skills in the editorial illustration and children's book industries. When she is not at school, she enjoys working with local non-profit organizations and working with kids.

	The Making of Imaginary Friends
I make brooches that attach to large soft sculptures that are meant to interact with the body. My brooches depict distorted human facial features. They end up looking like mutant human-like creatures. I often use hair, stone, or gems to add to the features. The backing is powder coated to add a colored base to the back of the creatures. These brooches are then paired with a large crochet sculpture that acts as a body.
My work is about feelings of comfort and nostalgia. I use my making processes as tools to relax and reflect. Getting lost in the work gives me time to think about what’s gotten me to where I am. Those feelings of comfort and childhood come through the work. The bright colors and fanciful imagery subconsciously give the work a whimsical feel which is often associated with childhood or youth. The texture and shapes of the large soft sculptures give them a lot of huggability which puts people at ease. My work is intended to have a calming, comforting effect.

BioJamie Byers is a New England based artist who is currently in her senior year of college at the Maine College of Art &#38;amp; Design, graduating in May, 2022 with a BFA in Metalsmithing &#38;amp; Jewelry. She’s been continuously interested in portraiture and her current body of work is a reflection of that.
Byers’ work primarily depicts portions of the face and the&#38;nbsp; grotesque qualities of facial features. She works in a wide range of materials including plastic, metal, stone, and glass, primarily using casting and crocheting techniques to convey volume and a sense of materiality in the work. She makes objects and wearables that have toy-like qualities that aim to elicit the human curiosity and need to play.
