William Thompson III

One Day At A Time

My thesis is about representation for people of all skin tones and national identities. For too long in the animation industry characters of any other race except for white, were represented through racial stereotypes and only used as a form of tokenism to make it seem as if the show is actually diverse, any other race except white were never the protagonist of their own show. That’s starting to change now with shows like Craig of the Creek and Fillmore. I want to normalize this by creating more shows that have Bipoc characters as the protagonist of their own show for people all over the world, not based on race but truly based on strong storytelling, so that one day the next generation of kids can grow up seeing a character that has the same skin tone as them be represented in the right way.

Bio

William Thompson, III 2D Animation & Mixed Media Artist

William was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. From a very young age he was interested in art and loved animation, from drawing his favorite superhero Spiderman to watching his favorite movie Chicken Run. William loves drawing his own creations from his head. For a while he stopped drawing until he was introduced to the school of the arts program in high school, that’s when his love for animation grew and he wanted to make some changes but first he needed to learn everything there is to know about animating and the animation industry.
