Artifacts: A Collection of Curios From The Land of Tractarnica

Inspired by high fantasy media, my thesis is a curio cabinet of relics, artifacts left behind by a wandering group of adventurers that had made history. Similar to how museums are a way we keep track and teach others of our world's history, this cabinet sheds light on the history of Tractarnica, a budding nation in a world of magics, monsters, and adventure. Although I've spent the past four years knowing I wanted to major in illustration, I couldn't let go of my fascination with sculpture and learning new mediums, and it's been very important to me that I show that love in the final work I make in college. Working on my thesis has been a rewarding way to add to my toolbox, and alongside illustration work, I've found the idea of prop-making to be a really exciting possibility. I hope to get to a place in my work where I can blend illustration with sculpture harmoniously, though overall, I just want to make work that tells a story.

Bio

Sam Sherman is an illustrator and sculptor from Goffstown, New Hampshire. Rather than sticking to one medium, they are interested in trying a bit of everything, from digital illustration to welding, needle-felting to mold making, glass-working to jewelry making—needless to say, mixed media is their happy place where it comes to art. Often inspired by Tolkein-esque high fantasy, their work takes on a friendly, fantastical, and approachable air. When not making art, Sam enjoys playing D&D with friends, video games, and hanging out with their pet rats.
