An Exploration of Speculative Zoology

Zoology is an intense field with an important role in helping us understand the distribution and classification of animals that exist in our world. The field of speculative zoology is the practice of following the same steps of a zoologist but on fictional animals. Through this fictitious genre, it is possible to tell the story of habitats, ecosystems, and biomes. All of this through a scientific lens that, no matter how alien or bizarre, can be believable through the grounded and understandable field of zoology.

Through this grounded lens, I explore the ecosystems of the Northern Sea. A setting 5 million years in the future, with climate conditions in extremes compared to the modern world. Through a series of ceramic figures, I will give snippets of the fauna from this foreign place, looking at the animals that thrive in it.

Bio

Quinn Medeiros is attending Maine College of Art and Design and will be attaining a bachelor of fine arts in May of 2022. Before coming to ceramics, Medeiros was trained in watercolors under the painter Jay Ryan. Medeiros has also been involved in exhibitions at MECA, Gallery X, and the New Bedford Art Museum.

As an artist, their work relates to their upbringing. Being raised in New Bedford, Medeiros grew up around a former whaling culture and was fascinated with the history and fauna around them. Utilizing this fascination with animals, Medeiros recreates animals past and present, living or dead. Using low fire clay as a medium to render textures and details as anatomically correct as possible. Their art, to them, is an expression of their interests and a way to show off the fascinating animals around them.
