Vehement Vessels
Vehement Vessels is a series regarding the body as a vessel for bottling emotional reaction. The idea of bottling refers to repressing and ignoring problems from within that are difficult to confront and navigate out loud. Our bodies can only handle so much information before reaching a threshold. Despite resilience and composure, constant endurance leaves us vulnerable and prone to inevitable overflow or explosion of emotion. This body of work iis for those who hold everything within themselves, and have trouble asking for help. By incorporating interdisciplinary methods and utilizing my own body as a medium, I explore the body as a vessel for both harboring and releasing emotion and experience.
Bio
Genna Medina-Cook was born and raised in South Boston, MA. Medina-Cook, affectionately known as “MC'' to few peers, is a master of her own ceremonies. From childhood theatre kid prodigy turned visual artist, the arts have always been a central force guiding her through life. Throughout her career, she holds every artistic space she has been through close to her heart. Genna received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting at Maine College of Art & Design. Her painting practice seeks to find a balance between using representational and abstraction to depict aspects of identity, behavior, and belonging. Her work takes on an immersive quality that extends off of the surface into space with the viewer. Provoked by the body, and nostalgia, she seeks to either personify, and recreate experiences her audience can connect with. Outside of making, she spends time with loved ones, and throws herself into chaotic moshpits at hardcore shows.
