Boiling it down to bare essentials, my thesis is about building a community for marginalized people. As a queer artist/designer and a car enthusiast, I found myself in a weird place in both worlds. The car community is dominated by toxic hypermasculine men who see little interest in the arts and are not especially tolerant of queer people or women within their community. On the flip side, many queer people are pushed away from developing or showing an interest in car culture because of the typical “car guy.” I found myself at the crossroads of the queer world and the car world and wanted to use my skills and interest as a designer to bridge that gap. I believe queer people should have safe spaces to express whatever interests they have, even if that interest is traditionally dominated by homophobia and toxic masculinity. Something else I hope to achieve through building this queer car community is to hopefully change the perspective of some typical straight car guys who may just be ignorant to queer people. I found many car guys accepted me without knowing I was queer, and I hope that if they were to find out that it wouldn’t change their perception of me.
