Dan Toomre

As We Wonder (And As We Change)

I make textiles that invoke the memories of home, and process how I define that term. I work with mundane aspects of everyday life- I draw inspiration from the garden of my childhood home, and the gravel on the trail that I walk on when I need to have a change of pace. This thesis project happened at a big transitional period in my life, and I wanted an outlet to think about what was happening. As We Wonder (And As We Change) is my response and my way of thinking about and processing the planned and unplanned changes in my life. To See and Admire is a reflection of Washington, and the house I lived in for 18 years. More specifically, thinking about what aspects of my hometown made me feel welcome and secure. To Feel and Express is from my time here in Portland, Maine, processing the change that most college students go through, and the severe OCD flare-ups that made me feel unsafe in my home. To Grow and Remember is different- it’s looking forwards, taking the lessons I’ve learned from past experiences and mistakes, learning to set boundaries, and letting myself grow and live more fully.

Bio

Dan Toomre is a textile artist from Redmond, Washington. He obtained his BFA from Maine College of Art and Design in 2022, and is pursuing his MAT at the college next year. Toomre creates men's garments, quilts, embroiders, and draws. He is inspired by the mundane things in life, and creates work centered around the small joys he experiences throughout the day- whether that be seeing an interesting flower on the way to work, listening to a good song and then discovering the album cover is ridiculous, or being totally alone on a walk and being able to sing along to your music.
