Clara-Luz Hoffman

When Red Meets Blue

My work analyzes my childhood nightmares through a narrative about the loss of innocence. As a child I was plagued with nightmare after nightmare. As an adult I would look back on these nightmares and think about their cause and meaning. One nightmare that stood out was one of Blue Boy and through that I created a narrative about the loss of his innocence. This narrative features the characters Blue Boy and Red Girl. Red Girl being the cause of Blue Boy's loss of innocence and also his corruption.

I want my viewers to be able to experience this piece through their own eyes and through the lens of their own childhood experiences. I want my viewer to think about the catalyst that caused them to lose their innocence and what that now means for them as an adult.

Bio

Clara-Luz grew up in a small arts community in New London, Connecticut, and discovered her passion for art at a young age. During High school she had a chance to go to a summer art intensive camp, there she discovered her passion for painting and decided this is what she would do for the rest of her life. Through her connections at a local gallery called the Hygienic Art Gallery, Hoffman frequently showed her work there while also interning with artist Troy Zaushny and Gallery manager Joseph Rivera. Through the guidance of artist Troy Zaushny, and in collaboration with Hygienic Art gallery she painted a mural at the police Station in New London. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the Maine College of Art in Portland Maine. She currently has works in the private collections of people from Massachusetts to Florida. During her years in college, she was named an endowed scholar, and received the Nancey Deming Award. She is currently interested in analyzing her childhood trauma through the lense of a childhood nightmare. Taking inspiration from artists such as Francsico Goya, Louise Bourgeois, Patricia Piccinini, she creates art around a seemingly innocent children's story, and makes eerie sculptures and paintings to tell the tale.
