Aidia Rayne Vansandlyne

Parasocial Sacraments : A Mad Bastard Manifesto

In short, my practice is multidisciplinary. After years of experimentation in an educational setting, I currently find myself solidified in telluric materials and processes. I build interactive, “Performing Objects” to speak on the historical perpetuations of two-system social structures and industrialization. Violent, ethereal, and satirical performance is used in tandem with these crafted, Performing Objects (acting as a wink at the Spectacle of American society). While elements of physical craft are integral to these productions, the real work exists in the space between audience and spectacle Already, we perform throughout each interaction of our day-to-day lives, and this line is not drawn at the Self, especially within a queer lens. This act of artistic performance (or ritual) allows me to subvert the boundary between Spectator and Spectacle; highlighting the audience’s true position as Participant in all aspects of separation.

Bio

Over the course of their artistic career, Aidia, or (ΔIDIΔ) has been developing their skills in blacksmithing, welding, clothes making, woodwork, masonry, public art, painting, performance art, industrial/experimental music-making, installation, playwriting, bookmaking, printmaking, etc. If nothing else, they wear many hats.

Growing up among New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Aidia learned very quickly—and very young—the power of observation. From a young age, they have believed strongly in the affective power within momentary, ephemeral spectacles found through observation—gone the moment you perceive them. Through their writing and performance work, Aidia attempts to grab hold of these ungraspable, forgotten blinks in time.
